Separating the Signal From the Noise with Data Visualizations
There are several levels in which UX (user experience) design and data visualizations can help boost and sharpen meaningful signals in data and strip away the noise. That is, help bring to the forefront the relationships in the data that are useful, important, and actionable while not drowning the user in a cacophony of irrelevant distractions.
This is not merely a matter of cleaning up the visual design, but also considering more fundamental issues such as where and how to include visualizations in the analytic process and what kind of interactions and user feedback loops to incorporate into the system. This presentation will explore several key ways in the analytics where UX design and data visualization can help increase the signal-to-noise ratio and help analysts and other decision makers receive a more useful balance of information and context. This talk will draw from examples in cyber security and the life sciences.
